Wilf has been Master of Ceremonies at St Wilfrid's since the church opened in 1958 and in 1983 received the Papal Medal Benemerenti for services to the Parish. Born in 1944 he was educated at St Michael's College and the University of Leeds, from where he graduated in Classics in 1967 taking a PGCE the following year. After short spells teaching at Hipperholme and Leeds Grammar Schools he was appointed in 1970 to Ossett School from where he retired as Head of Classics in July 2004.

In professional life Wilf has been President of the Association for Latin Teaching and of the Leeds Classical Association. He has directed and tutored on many courses, published articles and reviews, and served on a number of committees, including the Schools' Council, as well as administering resource collections for students and teachers. He tutors students on the Cambridge Online Latin Project and is the Project's language consultant. 

Other interests are represented by membership of Halifax and District Organists' Association, of which he is a former President, CAMRA, Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Preservation Society and the Friends of York Archaeological Trust.

Wilf was appointed an MBE for services to education in the 2002 New Year Honours.
